Clifford Castle in York

William the Conqueror built up this mound of dirt
sometime around 1066 and then built a fortress on top.  It burned and was replaced with 
this stone fortress.  York was the capital of the
North.  Anyone opposing William got hung in 
the square next to the fortress.  It was entertain-
ment for the town till they outlawed public hangings.
